The Corps Network awarded NOAA's collaborative GulfCorps as a 2019 Project of the Year, and a GulfCorps crew member as a Corpsmember of the Year. The initiative trains young people to restore coastal habitats and gain job skills.
Effort aims to restore oceanic, highly migratory fish from impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by partnering with fishermen on a voluntary six month break from pelagic longline fishing. Participants also have options to use alternative gear that reduces bycatch.
NOAA and partners hosted orientations for nearly 100 new GulfCorps members, underserved youth and vets who’ll receive hands-on job training and employment in habitat restoration in the Gulf of Mexico.
