Eklutna dam provides water and power to Anchorage but also completely dewaters a seven mile stretch of the Eklutna River. Many groups are working on a compromise to leave some water in the river so the salmon can return.
An extremely large dam, similar in size to the Hoover Dam, that has been proposed three times for a location north of Talkeetna on the Susitna River. It has never been licensed or constructed.
Every year, millions of fish migrate to their native habitats to reproduce. They are often blocked from completing their journey. When fish can’t reach their habitat, they can’t grow their populations.
