Smells Like Spring Transition

April 30, 2019

By Samantha Zeman

Or should I say, sounds like spring transition! Those of us on the Oregon coast have been treated to sunny, blustery days for the past week. It is hard not to notice the strong north winds as you wander (or avoid) the beach in the afternoon.

This is also great timing for our May NCC research cruise aboard the R/V Bell M. Shimada. The scientists sailed off yesterday and will be sampling the northern California Current, from northern California up into Washington. They will be observing the plankton community and collecting water samples along the way. Other projects include HABs monitoring, marine mammal surveys, zooplankton genetics, using innovative phytoplankton sampling techniques, and long-term microplastics studies. Stay tuned to hear more about the goings-on aboard the Bell M. Shimada!
