2023 Integrated West Coast Pelagics Survey Multi-function Trawl Testing

December 11, 2023

From December 11–15, 2023, researchers will evaluate a new multi-function trawl system's midwater and surface-trawling performance in preparation for the Integrated West Coast Pelagics Survey.

In 2025,  NOAA Fisheries will combine the Pacific Hake survey and Coast Pelagic Surveys into one integrated survey. In preparation for this integration, a new multi-function trawl system will be outfitted aboard the sampling vessel to allow sampling of both target species. From December 11–15, researchers will evaluate the multi-function trawl system's midwater and surface-trawling performance. They will use innovative technologies such as the net mensuration system, in-net cameras, and an aerial drone. Researchers also aim to develop meticulous protocols to operate this cutting-edge trawl system.
