Leg 4 Is Underway

August 06, 2019

By Sandy Parker-Stetter

The fourth and final leg of the 2019 Summer Survey is underway. The NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada departed Newport on 5 August and will wrap up in Seattle on 20 August. The ship will pick up transects north of Newport and work their way up to the southern end of West Vancouver Island. From there, our partners at Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada will join the survey and continue to work northward. The four Saildrones collecting data along Shimada's transects are patiently waiting for the Shimada to arrive, and we hope that winds will be near the happy medium (~10-15 kt) which are good for both wind-powered vehicles and Shimada operations. Everyone is excited to see what they'll find on the trip north.
