Through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, NOAA partnered with the Great Lakes Commission to restore the natural shoreline and improve community access to the waterfront at Brandenburg Park along Lake St. Clair in Michigan. Watch the video below to learn more about this work.
Through the Brandenburg Park Restoration Project, partners replaced a failing metal sea wall with a natural shoreline. They also built offshore shoals to reduce wave energy and prevent erosion. The effort will help improve fish and wildlife habitat and enhance community access to the waterfront. The park’s pier is one of only a few in the Detroit region where visitors can fish and view wildlife on Lake St. Clair.
NOAA works to improve fish passage, clean up debris, restore coastal wetlands, and remove invasive species throughout the Great Lakes region. Our work helps strengthen valuable Great Lakes fisheries, restore coastal wetlands that improve the quality of our water, and provide recreational opportunities for the public’s use and enjoyment. Since 2010, we have supported 85 projects through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
