Skeletal Records of Bleaching Reveal Different Thermal Thresholds of Pacific Coral Reef Assemblages

A limiting factor in studying the impact of ocean warming on the future of coral reefs is lack of quantitative data on thermal thresholds. We reconstruct a history of bleaching on reefs and use this to find the thermal thresholds of the coral communities.

Improving Representation of Human Well-Being and Cultural Importance in Conceptualizing the West Hawai’i Ecosystem

Cultural ecosystem services and human well-being are recognized as important elements of SES. This study examined frameworks related to cultural ecosystem services and human well-being to better portray their importance.

Leveraging Automated Image Analysis Tools to Better Assess Coral Reefs

Using previously analyzed imagery, we assess the capacity of a widely used machine-learning image analysis tool, CoralNet, to generate fully-automated estimates for the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) and American Samoa.

Densities and Drivers of Sea Turtle Populations Across Pacific Coral Reef Ecosystems

We estimate sea turtle densities, and describe trends based on sea turtle observations from 13 years of towed-diver surveys covering 7,300+ linear km, and more than 3,400 green and hawksbill sea turtles.

Laser Ablation–Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Reveals Confirmation of 60-Year Longevity for Red Snapper

In this study, red snapper otoliths were analyzed for 14C using a novel laser ablation–accelerator mass spectrometry technique to provide a basis for age validation that extends beyond the normal limits of bomb 14C dating.

Evidence of Local Adaptation in a Waterfall-Climbing Hawaiian Goby Fish

We evaluated a premise of local adaptation of marine and diadromous species in a Hawaiian goby known for its ability to climb waterfalls.

The One Health Approach to Toxoplasmosis: Epidemiology, Control, and Prevention Strategies

We review the natural history of T. gondii, its transmission and impacts in humans, domestic animals, wildlife and ecosystems. We also consider epidemiology, prevention, and control strategies, with the objective of facilitating awareness of this disease.

Growth and Longevity of Hawaiian Grouper — Input for Management and Conservation

We study the life history of the Hawaiian grouper for information to aid in future management and conservation assessments.

Safe Handling Practices to Increase Post-Capture Survival of Cetaceans, Sea Turtles, Seabirds, Sharks, and Billfish in Tuna Fisheries

We review ways to safely handle and remedy the incidental capture of sea turtles, cetaceans, seabirds, sharks, and billfish in fishing. As well as summarize the most effective measures for improving survivability of these species post incidental capture.
