StoryMap: Oyster Reef Restoration in the Chesapeake Bay

Take a virtual tour to learn about how—and why—NOAA and partners are restoring oyster reef habitat in the Chesapeake Bay.

Oysters help clean the water because they are filter feeders. They also grow in reefs that provide important habitat for fish and other species.

But in the Chesapeake Bay, there are only about 1 percent as many oysters as there used to be. To help the oyster population and the fish and other critters that depend on it, NOAA and partners are working together to restore oyster reefs. We plan to bring back oysters in 10 Chesapeake Bay tributaries by 2025. This StoryMap explains how. Jump in and take a tour!
