The Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis) was listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as endangered in 1993.  NOAA Fisheries has completed a review of the Saimaa seal's ESA listing status.  NOAA Fisheries is recommending that the Saimaa seal remain classified as endangered because the seal’s demography places it at high risk of extinction, and major threats have not been fully addressed. The Saimaa ringed seal is found in the freshwater Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland.
