Katie Sweeney

Biologist

Katie has been with NOAA Fisheries Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Marine Mammal laboratory since 2007, focusing on Steller sea lion and northern fur seal population dynamics and life history. Katie is certified as an FAA-certified Remote Pilot and serves as Mission Commander and UAS Lead for the Marine Mammal Laboratory. She has been flying small, rotor-craft drones to survey marine mammals since 2013. To improve upon traditional survey methods, Katie also works on research and development to harness new technology. Katie graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington, majoring in aquatic and fishery sciences, and has a Master of Environmental Management degree from Duke University, with a focus in Coastal Environmental Management.
