NOAA Aerial Whale Survey Team Assists with Disentangling North Atlantic Right Whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

On July 9, 2019 while photographing right whales for identification, the NOAA Fisheries aerial whale survey team re-sighted a known entangled whale. They then assisted with relocating it for Canadian rescuers, and helped them a few days later by monitoring from above. As the rescue team worked to free the line, the aerial crew let them know how the entanglement appeared to change as a result of their efforts.

Record Number of Leatherback Turtles Tagged in North Carolina

Thirteen leatherback turtles were sampled and tagged off Beaufort, North Carolina, in May by NOAA Fisheries Northeast and Southeast Science Center staffs and colleagues, continuing a project begun in 2017 to assess the turtles abundance, movements, behavior, and health status.

Lone Bowhead Whale Sighted in Gulf of Maine

Bowhead whales generally live in Arctic waters around 54° North latitude, migrating north into the high Arctic in the summer months and to lower latitudes of the Arctic in the winter. For the past few years a lone bowhead has been sighted in the waters off Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
