Explore a NOAA Career: Summer 2024 Paid Internships in the Chesapeake Bay

December 11, 2023

College students: Apply by January 28, 2024, for these opportunities to learn from and work with NOAA scientists and other experts.

NOAA internships are a great way for college students to explore potential career paths. Our summer interns work with NOAA experts for roughly 12 weeks during the summer. They contribute to NOAA’s mission, gain valuable experience, boost their resumes, and try out a potential science career.

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office is teaming up with the Chesapeake Research Consortium to offer five Chesapeake-focused internships through two separate internship programs in summer 2024. These paid internships will run from mid-May through mid-August. Applications are due by January 28, 2024.

Be sure to check out more NOAA Fisheries internships and other opportunities outside the Chesapeake Bay, too!

Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring Program

Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring is an internship program intended for students who identify as a member of underrepresented and underserved groups in science. These include students who identify as people of color, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQAI+ community, persons from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and first-generation college students. These internships are for undergraduate students who will enter their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college this fall. They are also open to recent college graduates, including graduate students. We are offering two internships through the Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring program.

Fish Ecology Intern

This internship is a field-based experience. The intern will support our fisheries-related survey operations and will work on independent projects that include analyzing fisheries data. They will be based out of the Cooperative Oxford Lab in Oxford, Maryland.

Environmental Literacy—Workgroup Intern

This intern will work with the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Education Workgroup. They will convene listening sessions that explore and document perspectives among diverse communities about the environment, health, and related topics. This internship can be based in either Annapolis or Oxford, Maryland.

NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office Summer Internship Program

The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office Summer Internship Program engages college students in working and learning about science, policy, and education. These internships are for students who will enter their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in fall 2024. Applicants for these positions must reside in and/or attend college/university in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The three NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office internships are:

Field Technician Intern

This intern will work with our field team, supporting operations on the water and on land. Tasks will include fish community monitoring, bathymetric survey work, and buoy systems operation and maintenance. This internship can be based in either Annapolis or Oxford, Maryland.

Environmental Literacy—Climate Intern

This intern will help develop and implement environmental literacy programs focused on climate change. They will work independently and as part of a team to create tools and programs that support environmental literacy efforts. This internship can be based in either Annapolis or Oxford, Maryland.

Partnerships and Engagement Intern

This intern will collaborate with organizations in the Choptank Habitat Focus Area on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and in the Middle Peninsula Habitat Focus Area on Virginia’s Western Shore. They will also engage with communities including tribal nations and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This intern will be based in Annapolis, Maryland.

We look forward to working alongside our 2024 summer interns. It’s a great opportunity for interns and our NOAA experts alike!
