Susanne McDermott

Fisheries Research Biologist

Susanne McDermott was born in Germany where she finished her undergraduate studies in Zoology at the Eberhardt Karls University in Tuebingen, Germany.  She spent one year as a graduate exchange student at Oregon State University and completed her masters and PhD at the University of Washington, School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science.  She has spent her career studying the ecology and life history of Alaskan groundfish at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle.  Her research has focused on abundance and movement studies of fish species.  A multi year mark recapture study of Atka mackerel was conducted to examine prey abundance in critical habitat for the endangered Steller sea lion in the Aleutian Islands and was completed in 2015.  In recent years she has focused on movement studies of Pacific cod using Pop-up satellite tags.  She currently works in the groundfish survey group and participates in the annual AFSC stock assessment groundfish surveys in Alaska waters.
