IB 03-52: NMFS Closes The Pacific Ocean Perch Fishery In The Western Aleutian District

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific ocean perch in the Western Aleutian District of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area, effective 12 noon, Alaska local time, July 16, 2003, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

The Western Aleutian District consists of Statistical area 543 — south of 55 degrees N. latitude and between 177 degrees E. longitude and the western limit of the U.S. EEZ.

This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the 2003 total allowable catch of Pacific ocean perch for this area and is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.20(d)(1)(iii).

After the effective date of this closure, the maximum retainable bycatch amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip.
