Permit Amendment—Testing Tori Lines in Hawaiʻi Shallow-Set Longline Fishery

In March 2022, NOAA Fisheries issued an experimental fishing permit to the Hawaii Longline Association. The permit allows HLA to evaluate the risk of seabird interactions in the Hawaiʻi shallow-set longline fishery when setting fishing gear one hour before and one hour after sunset and using tori lines (bird-deterring streamers).
NOAA Fisheries is amending this permit to extend the expiration date from September 24, 2023, to August 24, 2024. We are also modifying the list of vessels authorized under the permit. All other terms and conditions are unchanged, including the total fishing effort allowed under the permit. No fishing has occurred under the permit to date.
