Tribes and local governments play an important role in collecting marine mammal data and responding to entangled and stranded marine animals throughout remote areas of Alaska.
NOAA Fisheries continues to support saving and conserving stranded marine mammals through the John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program.
For fiscal year 2020, 43 competitive Prescott Grants were awarded totaling $3,709,981 to recipients from 19 states and one tribe, representing marine mammal stranding network partners from every Fisheries Region.
For fiscal year 2018, 36 competitive Prescott Grants were awarded totaling $2,808,513 to recipients from 19 states, representing marine mammal stranding network partners from every Fisheries Region.
Prescott Grants support a core mission of NOAA Fisheries – the conservation and recovery of protected marine species – by helping to improve our national marine mammal stranding response capabilities.
