These data represent the geographic area described in Title 50 CFR Part 622.34(d), Fisheries of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and South Atlantic, Subpart B - Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico, Seasonal and area closures designed to protect Gulf reef fish, Seasonal closure of the recreational sector for shallow-water grouper (SWG), 85 FR 20611, April 14, 2020.

The purpose of these data is to visually represent the seasonal and/or area closures for GIS analysis and display. This does not necessarily reflect the latest information contained in the Code of Federal Regulations. Users must assume responsibility to determine the appropriate use of these data as the currency and/or accuracy of these data cannot be guaranteed.

The 2016 Appropriations Act established a temporary 9-nm federal/state reef fish management boundary for the Gulf of Mexico, which was made permanent through the 2017 Appropriations Act (see Section 110 of the 2016 and 2017 Appropriations Acts (Public Laws 114-113 and 115-31)). For more details on this process, see the process description. The current text description from Title 50 Part 622, Fisheries of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and South Atlantic, is always the one, true definition of the seasonal and/or area closures. These, or any other depictions, are for information purposes only and shouldn't be relied on for regulatory purposes.

No specific test was performed on the dataset. For the state/federal marine boundary and EEZ lines, obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service, the data is a reflection of the largest scale raster nautical charts of the area. The number of decimal places used in the output format does not imply an accuracy level higher than the source chart documents. The positional point data from Title 50 CFR Part 622 is accurate to the distance published in that source, varying by closed area, from one second to one minute of latitude or longitude.

Process_Description:

The reef fish management boundary measures 9 nautical miles seaward of the U.S. baseline, recognized as the low-water line along the coast as marked on NOAA's nautical charts in accordance with the articles of the Law of the Sea. The baseline and related maritime limits are reviewed and approved by the interagency U.S. Baseline Committee. The US baseline of the Territorial Sea was provided by NOAA NOS. The Territorial Sea was buffered by 9 nautical miles using an Equidistant projection. The reef fish boundary is ambulatory and subject to revision based on accretion or erosion of the charted low water line. The reef fish boundary will be updated as soon as possible as the U.S. baseline is updated. This reef fish boundary was used as the State/Federal boundary for reef fish managment areas.
