Catherine Berchok

Acoustician

Catherine Berchok has been leading the Passive Acoustics Group at Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Marine Mammal Lab since 2007. After receiving her B.S. in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, she worked for many years as a researcher at the Mingan Island Cetacean Study in Quebec, Canada, before returning to school to earn her Ph.D. in Acoustics from Penn State University. At work, she enjoys being at sea, writing code, and the challenge of studying animals without being able to see them. At home, her interests involve spending time outdoors with her husband and son. She is partial to Seattle’s forests, local bands, and rock-free gardening.
