Summary

In 2019, NMFS announced the initiation of a 5-year review for seven foreign loggerhead Distinct Population Segments (DPSs): Mediterranean Sea DPS, Northeast Atlantic Ocean DPS, North Indian Ocean DPS, South Pacific Ocean DPS, South Atlantic Ocean DPS, Southeast Indo-Pacific Ocean DPS, and Southwest Indian Ocean DPS.

NMFS is required by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to conduct 5-year reviews to ensure that the listing classifications of species are accurate. The 5-year review must be based on the best scientific and commercial data available at the time of the review.

We requested submission of any such information on the foreign loggerhead DPSs, particularly information on the status, threats, and recovery of the DPSs that has become available since their listing on September 22, 2011.

We have now completed the 5-year review and conclude that no change to the listing status of any of the foreign loggerhead sea turtle DPSs is warranted at this time.
